Winter is finally here. While it is the time to revel in the Christmas festivities and usher in the New Year, you should also pay heed to your body as it begins to adjust to the new weather. Winter can trigger or worsen specific health problems, including the common cold, asthma, and sore throat.

  • Common Cold
    You can suffer from common cold and flu owing to compromised immunity. Maintain hygiene and wash your hands frequently as this will take care of the germs present on common surfaces, including doorknobs and handles. Also, make sure you keep your house clean, mainly if someone is suffering from common cold and flu.
  • Sore Throat
    Very common during winter, a sore throat is almost always caused due to viral infections. The associated dust and dryness compound problems further. A quick resolution to this problem is gargling with salty, lukewarm water. Its anti-inflammatory properties can soothe a cough and sore throat.
  • Painful and Swollen Joints
    People who have arthritis often complain of stiff joints during the winter.. You should engage in light cardiovascular exercises such as swimming, considering it is easy on the joints. Also, keep your feet warm as it takes care of the winter stiffness.
  • Norovirus
    This contagious stomach bug gains potency during winter. Common symptoms include diarrhoea and vomiting. You must drink adequate water every day to reduce the chances of dehydration.
  • Asthma
    The cold and dry air is a significant trigger of asthma-related symptoms, including shortness of breath and wheezing. Try to stay indoors on windy days. However, if you must step out, make sure you tie a scarf loosely around your mouth and face. Most importantly, don’t skip your medicines and keep the inhaler handy.

An improved immune system is your first line of defence against these ailments. Make sure you stick to a balanced nutritious diet, get sound sleep, and drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
